4th INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE TRIENNIAL ragARTz
Switzerland (Bad Ragaz, Altes Bad Pfäfers) and Liechtenstein (Vaduz)
May 16th - October 31st 2009
THREE BLACK STONES, Version I - III
THREE BLACK STONES, Version I
Location: CH-7312 Altes Bad Pfäfers
Material: Venetian glass
Dimensions: the longest river stone 50 cm, the tallest 25 cm
Glass as A material is the alchemical processing of quartz, a major component of the mountains surrounding the upper Rhine Valley. The river stone forms refer to the geological history of the region as an area of glacial retreat.
THREE BLACK STONES, Version II
Location: near Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, LI-9490 Vaduz, pedestrian area
100% to scale enlargement of Version I
In urban space (the pedestrian area), human being is the measure of all things: houses, streets, sidewalks – even trees and flowers there are adapted to scale.
Urban life was first made possible through barter trade: gold.
Material: polished bronze, realized by Bildgießerei Noack, Berlin.
THREE BLACK STONES, Version III
Location: CH-7310 Bad Ragaz, in the park between the Maienfelderstraße and the Grand Resort Quellenhof
The park with its ancient trees is viewed as a natural space.
Human measure plays no role in nature, and proportionate dimensions do not exist. The sculpture is a pneumatic construction, 20 times the size of Version I to scale (the longest river stone is c. 10 meters long, the highest 5 meters high).
Confusion is deliberately set in scene – the huge river stones make people, cars, trees and even the Grand Hotels appear toy like.
Material: High tech plastic foil, machines.
THREE SHADOWS
Location: in front of Grand Hotel Quellenhof, Ragaz
Material: made of ~3 tons of welded steel
Dimensions:
1st Shadow: l 340 x h 250 x t 70 cm, weight c. 1000kg
2nd Shadow: l 590 x h 200 x t 90 cm, weight c. 1300kg
3rd Shadow: l 220 x h 160 x t 60 cm, weight c. 300kg
